Trim the shaky stuff

Remove shaky footage by keeping only the steady parts

To remove shaky footage from a wedding you can stabilize every clip or cut the shaky parts out, and Hailo does the second. It does not stabilize. It keeps each clip's longest steady, sharp stretch and leaves the shaky parts off your timeline, for free, without touching a single original.

Stabilize or cut: what a wedding edit needs

Most advice on how to remove shaky video is about stabilizing: warping a wobbly shot until it holds still. That is the right tool for the one shot you cannot lose. On a whole wedding, the shaky seconds are mostly the walk between setups or a bump on the gimbal, wrapped around steady takes you actually want.

So Hailo removes camera shake from video the way an editor does, by leaving it out. The steady part of each clip lands on the timeline at its natural in and out points, and the rest stays off it. Your editor's own stabilizer, such as Warp Stabilizer for shaky footage in Premiere Pro, is still there for the shot you decide to save.

Remove shaky footage in one pass

Every clip is checked for the parts worth keeping, and each one keeps its longest steady, sharp stretch. Out of focus footage is not something Hailo can fix. What it leaves off:

  • shaky sections and camera bumps
  • unusable footage from start to finish: a lens cap, the floor, a false start

A bar you set, camera by camera

Choose how strict, from keep more to cut more: Lenient, Balanced or Strict. Set it per camera too, looser for the gimbal and stricter for the tripod. The dance floor gets its own bar, so energetic camera work is not trimmed like the ceremony, and a deliberate gimbal move is never judged against a locked-off wide.

You also set the shortest piece you would ever cut with, from 1.5 to 5 seconds, and how a clip is trimmed: all of its usable footage, each good take within it as its own piece, or only its single best take. A clip dropped entirely carries a red badge with the reason, such as Junk Footage, so you can see why and keep it anyway, and the shake graph shows each trim inside a clip.

Free, on your Mac, and nothing deleted

Trimming costs no tokens. Untick moment labeling and the run is trimming only. Nothing is ever deleted: your originals stay where they were, and trimming only decides what lands on the timeline, named Steady Clips so you always know. Play it in the selects preview to see how the trimming landed, or click Full Clips for the whole clips, untrimmed.

Change your mind after the run and Reanalyze smoothness (keeps labels) redoes only the trimming with your new settings, leaving every moment label in place.

How you use it in Hailo

  1. On the intake checklist, leave Trim out the shaky footage on. Untick labeling for a free trim-only run.
  2. Click Adjust and choose Lenient, Balanced or Strict.
  3. Pick a trim mode and the shortest clip you would ever use.
  4. Run it. Your timeline arrives as Steady Clips.
  5. Read the red badge on any dropped clip, and select it if you want it back.
  6. Changed your mind? Click Reanalyze smoothness (keeps labels), then re-export.

Questions filmmakers ask

How do I remove the shaky parts of a video?

To remove shaky footage, cut it out rather than fix it. In an editor that means scrubbing each clip and setting in and out points around the steady stretch. Hailo does that for every clip of a wedding at once: it keeps each clip's longest steady, sharp stretch and puts a reason on every clip it drops whole. Nothing is deleted.

Is it better to stabilize or cut shaky footage?

For a wedding, cut first. Most shaky seconds sit between good takes, and stabilizing them only polishes footage you would not use. Stabilize the one shot that matters and cannot be replaced, like a vow you only caught handheld. Hailo cuts and never stabilizes, so that shot still goes through your editor's stabilizer.

Can you fix out of focus footage?

Hailo cannot, and nothing in it tries. It keeps each clip's longest sharp stretch on the timeline and leaves the fixing to you. Sharpening in your editor can help a slightly soft shot, but it cannot add detail the lens never caught.

Why does my gimbal footage look shaky?

Usually it is footsteps showing up as a bob, a gimbal out of balance, or a long lens magnifying every small move, and those get fixed on the shoot. In the edit, Hailo can give a gimbal camera a looser bar than a tripod and never judges a deliberate gimbal move against a locked-off wide, so real movement stays and the bumps go.

Can software find blurry clips automatically?

Yes, in part. Hailo keeps each clip's longest steady, sharp stretch, so the sharpest part of a clip is what lands on the timeline, and a clip it leaves out whole gets a red badge with the reason. Rejected clips stay in the grid, so you can check one in QuickTime and keep it if you disagree.
