A Syncaila alternative that also cuts the ceremony and toasts

A Syncaila alternative only makes sense if you want more than sync, because Syncaila is a dedicated multi-camera auto-sync tool for Windows and macOS that takes on a full day of shooting. Hailo syncs your ceremony and toast cameras with every recorder, then cuts both films and opens them as real multicams in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve. It also runs the rest of your wedding business, and you may well keep both.

What Syncaila does well

Before comparing Syncaila alternatives, it is worth being clear on what Syncaila is. It takes manual syncing off an editor's plate, from a handful of clips to a full day of shooting across many cameras and recorders. You export an XML or AAF from your editor, sync in Syncaila, and bring the result back in. It works with Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Vegas and Edius, on Windows and macOS.

Its controls go deep: clip ordering options, clips with no audio placed in chronological order, a fine fix tool, a multiple-takes mode, automatic trimming of recordings no camera matches, edit preservation and watch folder automation. One developer has built and refined it since 2017.

PluralEyes, Syncaila and Hailo

If you are weighing Syncaila vs PluralEyes, know that Maxon moved PluralEyes into limited maintenance mode in January 2023, so it gets no new enhancements. Hailo answers a different question from both. It does not sync every project you will ever shoot. It handles the ceremony and the toasts, and then it keeps going. Our PluralEyes page has Maxon's details.

What happens after the sync

As multicam sync software, Hailo's film builder takes a folder per camera plus your recorder files and returns a synced timeline: stacked angles, a real multicam clip, or a single camera cut with fades. A sync tool would hand that back and stop. Hailo carries on into the edit.

For the ceremony, cut-aways land when the couple laughs or tears up, the floating camera is used only for its steady seconds, and a guest standing in front of a tripod is steered around. You set the style in numbers: hold lengths, cut-away timing and how much floating camera you want. The toasts come with Documentary, Intimate and Energetic presets, every number editable, and are heard in the language spoken, one language per recording.

Audio follows the part of the day: each part plays the clearest mic, often the DJ board for the officiant and the lav for the vows, and each mic is brought to the same speaking level (ceremony audio has more). Both films land as multicams you can re-cut, and the finish screen graphs each one with its biggest moments named.

Choosing a Syncaila alternative, honestly

Stay with Syncaila, or keep it beside Hailo, if you cut in Avid Media Composer, Vegas or Edius, work on Windows, sync projects that are not weddings, or need to add a camera to a timeline you have already cut. Hailo syncs only as part of building a ceremony or speeches film, hands off only to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve, and needs a Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later.

Syncaila also has a free mode for small projects and a permanent license, and Hailo has neither. If you want a Syncaila alternative that is free, Hailo is not it: it is a subscription with a free trial. What the subscription buys is the rest of the studio: offload, sorting by moment and shake trimming for the whole day, a CRM from first inquiry to final payment, and 4K film delivery, all in one app.

Syncing a wedding ceremony in Hailo

  1. On a couple's Edit hub, choose Ceremony film from the Make rail.
  2. Pick Multicam. If Premiere Pro is your editor, turn on one-click multicam when Hailo asks.
  3. Click Add a folder for each camera…, then add the recorder files. Each camera becomes one row, and one track in your editor.
  4. Decide on Normalize audio. Off keeps the untouched recorder on A1. On evens out the loudness and keeps the raw recorder muted underneath.
  5. Choose where to save, click Build the film, then open it in your editor from the done screen.

Questions filmmakers ask

What is the difference between Hailo and Syncaila?

Syncaila is a dedicated sync tool for any multi-camera project, on Windows and macOS, working with six editors. Hailo is a Mac app for wedding filmmakers: it syncs the ceremony and toast cameras with your recorders, cuts both films, and opens them in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve. It also runs bookings and delivery. Syncaila goes wider on sync, and Hailo goes further on the wedding.

Does Hailo work with Avid or Windows?

No to both. Hailo opens in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve, not Avid Media Composer, Vegas or Edius. It is a Mac app for Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later. Manage and Deliver also open in any browser, so invoices and galleries work from a Windows PC, but the footage side, sync included, needs the Mac.

Can Hailo sync every camera and recorder from a wedding ceremony?

Yes. One multicam holds up to eight camera angles, and every recorder you add is placed against them, from lavs to a DJ board feed to 32-bit float files. Cameras without a mic go in by timecode when your cameras were jam-synced, and a body that stopped and restarted keeps its short takes on its own angle. When the build finishes, any camera Hailo could not line up is listed by name, ready for you to place by hand.

Do I still need a sync tool if I use Hailo?

For the ceremony and the toasts, no: Hailo syncs them as part of building those films. For other projects, probably yes. Hailo's sync is built for those two films, so a stage performance, a brand film or an event that is not a wedding belongs in Syncaila or your editor's own sync. The two can sit side by side without stepping on each other.
