A DaVinci Resolve multicam, built for you

A DaVinci Resolve multicam lets you cut the ceremony by clicking angles in the viewer while it plays. Hailo builds that multicam inside DaVinci Resolve for you, along with the rest of the wedding: media pool folders by moment, a timeline for every file the run made, and the multicam parked where every camera is rolling. One click in DaVinci Resolve Studio, one Scripts menu pick on the free edition, and no macOS permission.

DaVinci Resolve

Hailo builds the whole project. On free Resolve, finish with one Scripts menu click.

How a DaVinci Resolve multicam is usually made

In the Media Pool, select your angles, right-click and choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips. Name it, set Angle Sync to Sound or Timecode, and DaVinci Resolve lines the angles up. On the Edit page, switch the source viewer to Multicam and click an angle as it plays to cut.

External audio usually comes first. DaVinci Resolve auto sync audio (right-click in the Media Pool, then Auto Sync Audio based on waveform or timecode) attaches a recorder to each camera clip. For a wedding, that DaVinci Resolve multicam sync is where the evening goes: a camera across the room whose scratch audio is too faint to match, takes that stopped and started, two recorders covering one ceremony.

What Hailo builds inside DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve does not open a timeline file the way Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro do, so Hailo builds the project inside it. Open DaVinci Resolve, click the open button on Hailo's done screen, and the status line follows along until it reports the clips on your timeline.

You get your footage in DaVinci Resolve media pool folders by moment, one timeline per file the run made, and for a Multicam film build, a true multicam clip with every angle synced. The playhead sits at the first point where every camera has picture, so the multicam viewer opens on live angles instead of black tiles from before the last camera started. A ceremony arrives already cut, as a multicam you can re-cut; the ceremony cut explains what is on screen when.

Every build lands in a project named after the couple, followed by Hailo. A sorting run adds what you asked for in parentheses, such as Steady Clips and Bins, so each kind of run gets its own project. Run the same choices again and Hailo reuses that project.

Studio, the free edition and the Scripts menu

The one-click build uses DaVinci Resolve scripting from outside the app. In DaVinci Resolve Studio, turn it on under DaVinci Resolve > Preferences > System > General > External scripting using > Local.

On the free edition, or with that setting off, Hailo cannot reach DaVinci Resolve from outside, so the done panel adds one step: in DaVinci Resolve, open Workspace > Scripts and pick the script named for your couple. It builds the same project the one-click path would have. If the script is not in the menu, quit and reopen DaVinci Resolve, which reads that menu at launch.

DaVinci Resolve wedding video editing, from sort to cut

DaVinci Resolve can import an FCPXML through File > Import > Timeline, but a wedding needs folders, several timelines and a multicam at once, which one imported file does not give you. Hailo builds all of it in place. Change how the footage is trimmed or organized later and re-export: Hailo writes a new project for the new choice, and nothing is analyzed again. The editor workflow page shows how the three editors compare.

How you open a wedding in DaVinci Resolve

  1. Set DaVinci Resolve as your editor under Settings > Your editor.
  2. Sort a wedding, or build a ceremony or speeches film with Multicam chosen.
  3. Open DaVinci Resolve, then click the open button on Hailo's done screen.
  4. If the done panel shows a second step, choose Workspace > Scripts in DaVinci Resolve and pick the script named for your couple.
  5. Open the project named after the couple and start cutting.

Questions filmmakers ask

How do I sync a multicam in DaVinci Resolve?

Select the angles in the Media Pool, right-click, choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips and set Angle Sync to Sound or Timecode. Sync an external recorder to the camera clips first with Auto Sync Audio. Hailo does the syncing before DaVinci Resolve opens and builds the multicam for you, every angle in place.

Why does Auto Sync Audio fail in DaVinci Resolve?

Usually because the camera's own audio is too faint or too different from the recorder to match: a camera across the room, a mic pointed away from the speaker, or files that never overlap in time. Timecode sync fails when the camera and recorder clocks were never matched. Hailo places recorders by timecode or by waveform, and places a camera with no mic by timecode when your cameras were jam-synced.

Does the free version of DaVinci Resolve allow scripting?

Not the outside scripting Hailo's one-click build uses. On the free edition, Hailo hands you a script instead: open Workspace > Scripts in DaVinci Resolve, pick the one named for your couple, and it builds the same project with the same folders, timelines and multicam. In DaVinci Resolve Studio, turn on External scripting using > Local and the build runs in one click.

How do I make a multicam clip in DaVinci Resolve?

From the Media Pool: select the clips, right-click, choose Create New Multicam Clip Using Selected Clips, name it and pick an Angle Sync method. Edit it into a timeline, then set the source viewer to Multicam and click angles as it plays. With Hailo, a Multicam film build arrives as that clip, synced and ready, parked where every camera has picture.
