Sync external audio with video for every lav and recorder
To sync external audio with video at a wedding, every lav, field recorder and board feed has to land under the right picture, for the whole ceremony and every toast. Hailo places each recorder against your cameras, reads 32-bit float files correctly, and fills any stretch no recorder caught with the camera's own sound, so the timeline never goes silent.
What you get
Recorders placed
Lavs and recorders land where they belong, by timecode or by waveform.
32-bit float recorders
Read correctly, never mistaken for distortion.
Jam-synced timecode
Trusted once Hailo proves it across your bodies.
Cameras with no mic
Placed by timecode when your cameras were jam-synced.
The right audio track
A camera writing eight tracks is heard on the one with the room in it.
The camera across the room
Still placed, even when its mic barely heard the toasts.
No silent gaps
Where no recorder rolled, the camera audio fills in.
How to sync audio and video recorded separately, the long way
In an editor you do it a pair at a time: a clap on the slate, Merge Clips in Premiere Pro, Auto Sync Audio in DaVinci Resolve. That is fine for an interview. A wedding is dozens of camera files against several recorders that each started and stopped on their own schedule, and checking every pairing by eye is where the night goes.
Hailo does the whole set in one build and hands your editor the result. It is audio sync software for Mac that ends with a timeline open in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, not a list of clips to finish lining up.
Sync external audio with video for every recorder you ran
In the film builder, point Audio at a recorder's folder or at the files themselves, then click Add more audio for a second recorder, the officiant's lav or the DJ board feed. Each one lands under the picture where it belongs. That is also how to sync audio with multiple cameras: every angle and every recorder go in together and come out lined up. If your cameras and recorders were jam-synced, that timecode is used; if not, there is nothing to set up.
32-bit float recorders are read correctly. A loud cheer on a float file is never mistaken for distortion, so a recorder that captured the vows cleanly is not passed over for clipping that is not there.
The cameras that make it harder
Some angles are awkward to sync by hand. Hailo handles these without being asked:
- A camera writing eight sound tracks is heard on the track with the room in it, not just the first one.
- The camera across the room is still placed, even when its mic barely heard the toasts.
- A camera with no mic still lands in its place when your cameras were jam-synced.
- No separate recorder at all: turn that switch on, mark the camera whose sound should play, and the angles still line up.
No silent gaps on the timeline
Recorders start late and stop early. Where no recorder rolled, the camera audio fills in, so the film never drops to silence where no recorder caught it. On the ceremony film the recorder sits on A1 under every angle, and each camera keeps its own sound on its clip, muted, for when you want the room.
The Normalize audio switch, ceremony only, decides what A1 holds. Off, it is your untouched recorder file. On, it is a leveled copy that sits quiet vows and loud claps together, with the raw recorder muted on A2 for reference. The speeches film always evens its levels. Choosing the clearest microphone for each part of the ceremony has its own page.
When the build finishes, Preview the film plays a 720p preview inside Hailo with the recorder audio, so you can check the sync before you open your editor. The preview is only for checking; the timeline in your editor uses your original files at full quality. The cameras' side of all this is on the multicam sync page.
How you use it in Hailo
- Open Make ceremony film or Make speeches film and add a folder for each camera.
- Under Audio, choose the recorder's folder or the recorder files themselves.
- Click Add more audio for a second recorder, a lav or the board feed.
- No recorder? Turn on No separate recorder and mark the camera whose sound should play.
- Ceremony only: switch on Normalize audio if you want a leveled copy on A1.
- Build, then click Preview the film to check the sync before you open your editor.
Questions filmmakers ask
How do I sync audio and video recorded separately?
For a clip or two, use your editor: a slate clap, Merge Clips in Premiere Pro or Auto Sync Audio in DaVinci Resolve. To sync external audio with video for a whole wedding, add your camera folders and recorder files to Hailo's film builder. It places every recorder under the right picture in one build and opens the result in your editor.
How do you sync a lav recorder that was never jam-synced?
Add the lav's files under Audio with your other recorders and build. Nothing needs setting up on the day: a lav that ran on its own in the groom's pocket still lands under the right picture. If your gear was jam-synced, that timecode is used too. Check the result with Preview the film before you open your editor.
Why does external audio drift out of sync on a long ceremony?
Every recorder and camera keeps its own time, and no two run at exactly the same speed, so over a long take the sound and picture can slowly slide apart. Hailo lines each recorder up with the picture, but it does not promise drift correction. On a long ceremony, check the end as well as the start, and nudge it in your editor if it slid.
Does Premiere Pro handle 32-bit float audio?
Yes. 32-bit float audio in Premiere Pro opens like any other WAV. On Hailo's side, float recorders are read correctly before the timeline is written: a loud cheer is never mistaken for distortion, so a good recorder is not passed over for clipping that is not there. With Normalize audio off, A1 in Premiere Pro is your untouched recorder file.
Can you sync audio and video automatically?
Yes. In Hailo you never line up a recorder by hand: add the camera folders and the audio, build, and every recorder lands under its picture. Jam-synced timecode is used when you have it, and nothing extra is needed when you do not. Any camera Hailo could not match is named on the done screen and still lands on the stacked timeline.
