Updates

Install a new version of Hailo from the Update tile in one click, with no password and no download to drag, and know what to do if an update fails.

When a new version of Hailo is ready, an Update tile appears in the sidebar. One click downloads it, installs it and relaunches Hailo. You never enter a password and never see a .dmg.

Note

New features in Manage and Deliver arrive on their own, with no update at all. The Update tile only appears when the app itself, including the Edit wing, has a new build.

When the tile appears

Hailo checks for a new version a few seconds after it opens and every 15 minutes after that. When it finds one, an Update tile appears in the sidebar footer, above Feedback, and pulses gently until you act on it. The tile stays as you move between pages and wings.

Hovering it shows a tooltip:

  • Update ready
  • "Version 1.2.140 is ready." (or "A new version is available." if the number is not known yet)
  • Click to see what's new

The tooltip itself is clickable.

Install the update

  1. Click Update (or its tooltip).
  2. A panel titled What's new opens. The line under the title reads "Version 1.2.140 is ready to install." followed by that version's changes in plain language. While they load it reads "Loading the latest changes…".
  3. Click Update now. Click Later to close the panel and keep working; the tile stays.
  4. The tile becomes a progress mark: the Hailo logo fills in from the top as the download completes, with the percentage underneath. While Hailo waits on the download to start it shows "···".
  5. The label changes to Installing. Hailo closes, swaps in the new version and reopens on its own.

That is the whole process. There is no password prompt, no disk image to open and nothing to drag into Applications. The previous version is moved to the Trash for you.

If Hailo is mid-analysis or building a film when you click Update now, it asks before closing. See Quitting while Hailo works.

After the update

Hailo reopens on the version you installed. The first time Edit opens after an update, a Starting Edit screen may show for a moment while the engine warms up. The version line in the More menu shows the new number. See Versions.

If it didn't work

The tooltip reads "Update failed. Click to retry." The download or the install stopped. Hailo has reopened the version you had, and nothing is broken. Click Update again to retry from where it left off; downloads resume rather than restart.

The tooltip reads "Not enough disk space. Free up 1.2 GB, then retry." Your startup disk is full. Hailo checks free space before downloading and before expanding the update, and stops rather than filling the disk. Empty the Trash or move footage off the startup disk, then click Update again. This is the most common cause of a failed update.

The tile disappeared before you clicked it. Hailo re-checks every few minutes and the tile returns. Open any page with a sidebar and wait a moment.

The tile never appears at all. You may be on the newest version already. Compare the version in More with the one on hailo.studio/download. If the download page is newer and the tile does not show after 15 minutes, quit and reopen Hailo.

Two Hailo icons appear after an update. See Two copies of Hailo.
