Where files land

Choose where Hailo puts finished timelines and films, find them after a run, and know which folder never to move.

Everything Hailo makes for you to open, timelines, film exports and previews, goes to one place you choose once. You set it in Edit settings and it applies from the next export onward.

The three output modes

Open the Edit settings gear and find Where finished files go. Three choices:

Choice Where deliverables go
Next to the footage, in a "Hailo Edit" folder (default) A folder named Hailo Edit inside the wedding folder you dropped in. Everything for one wedding stays with that wedding.
One folder for everything One library folder you pick with Choose. Every wedding gets its own subfolder inside it, named for the wedding. Good when your footage is on a network drive and you want deliverables local. The field reads "No folder picked yet" until you choose.
Ask me each time A folder picker opens each time you export by hand.

With Ask me each time, anything Hailo writes on its own has nobody to ask: the timeline at the end of an analysis, a film built as part of Build Everything, an automatic re-export. Those fall back to Next to the footage.

The setting takes effect for the next export. See Edit settings for the rest of that panel.

Film builds on the film builder have their own Save to field and do not use this setting.

Fallbacks when the folder cannot be written

If the folder you chose cannot be written to (the drive is unplugged, the card is read-only), Hailo falls back, in order, to:

  1. A Hailo Films folder in your Movies folder
  2. A Hailo Films folder on your Desktop

Both are flat folders. A rebuild overwrites the previous file rather than piling up copies. Because weddings from different days can share a fallback folder, files written there carry the couple's name so you can tell them apart.

The "Saved to" line

On the results screen after a run, the done panel ends with a Saved to line and the folder path. Click the path to open the folder in Finder. This is the quickest way to see which mode is in effect without opening Settings.

Do not move the folder Hailo created

Heads up

Do not rename or move the folder Hailo created next to your footage, or Hailo will not find the project again and you would have to analyze it from scratch. You can move the whole wedding folder to another drive as long as that folder travels inside it; point the project at its new location when Hailo asks.

The output mode above changes where your deliverables go. It does not move that folder.

Deliverable names

An analysis run writes one timeline per wedding, named for what it is:

Name When
Full Clips You asked for labels only. Every clip, whole, labelled and coloured by moment.
Steady Clips You also asked Hailo to trim shaky footage. Each clip is cut to its steadiest window and the shaky takes are dropped. Still labelled and coloured.

Only one word changes, and it names the one thing that differs. The couple's name is not in the file name, because the deliverables folder is already per wedding. The exception is a shared fallback folder, where the name is added back.

Film builds are named for the film: the ceremony and speeches files carry "Ceremony" or "Speeches" and the couple, so a speeches build never overwrites a ceremony build.

One timeline per wedding

There is one timeline file per wedding per run. If a run trimmed shaky footage, Steady Clips is the deliverable, and a re-export goes to that same file and overwrites it. Hailo does not leave an untrimmed twin next to it. See Re-export.

If it didn't work

What you see What to do
Files landed in a Hailo Films folder in Movies instead of next to the footage The wedding folder could not be written to at the time. Check the drive, then Re-export with Current Preferences.
"One folder for everything" is selected but nothing lands there The field still reads "No folder picked yet". Click Choose and pick a folder.
Hailo says a project cannot be found The folder Hailo created next to your footage was moved or renamed. Put it back inside the wedding folder. If the whole drive was renamed, use Relink project > Locate Folder… when Hailo asks.
