Log in with Touch ID

Set up Touch ID on your Mac, use it alongside two-factor, and forget a Mac when you are done with it.

On a Mac with Touch ID, Hailo can unlock with your fingerprint instead of your password, and Touch ID counts as the second step for accounts with two-factor on.

Set it up

You cannot turn Touch ID on from Settings. It is set up by logging in with your password once and letting Hailo remember the Mac:

  1. If you are signed in, open the avatar menu and press Log out.
  2. On the login screen, type your email and password.
  3. Leave Keep me logged in ticked. It is ticked by default.
  4. Press Log in. Finish the two-factor code if you are asked for one.

From the next launch, the login screen shows a Use Touch ID button with your email under it, and "or log in with password" beneath that. Under Settings > Account > This Mac, the Touch ID & Remember me row shows an Active chip and "This Mac unlocks with Touch ID."

Note

The Account page tells you to "check Remember me on the login screen". The checkbox on the login screen is labelled Keep me logged in. They are the same box.

Day to day

  • Two-factor off: Hailo usually signs you in on launch with no login screen and no fingerprint prompt. The Use Touch ID button is for after you have logged out.
  • Two-factor on: on launch, Hailo signs you in without a code if this Mac is trusted (see Trusted devices). Otherwise the login screen appears; press Use Touch ID, touch the sensor, and you are in. The fingerprint proves you are at the enrolled Mac, so no emailed code is needed.
  • The Use Touch ID button only appears on a Mac with Touch ID hardware (or an Apple Watch that can unlock it) and a remembered login.

When Hailo asks for your password instead

Message Why
"Touch ID was cancelled or failed." You cancelled the prompt or the sensor did not read. Try again, or use your password.
"Your remembered login has expired. Please log in with your password." The stored login is no longer valid. Log in with your password once, with Keep me logged in ticked, and Touch ID is back.
"No remembered credential. Log in with your password first." This Mac has nothing stored. Log in with your password once.
"Not set up on this Mac. Log out, then check Remember me on the login screen." (Account page) Touch ID is not set up. Follow the steps above.

A password reset and turning two-factor off both drop the remembered login. After either one, log in with your password once to set Touch ID up again.

Forget this Mac

To stop Hailo remembering you on a Mac (before selling it, or on a shared machine):

  1. Open Settings > Account and find This Mac > Touch ID & Remember me.
  2. Press Forget this Mac.
  3. Confirm "Stop using Touch ID on this Mac? You'll need your password the next time you log in."
  4. You see "Touch ID login forgotten on this Mac. Log in with your password next time."

Forgetting a Mac removes the remembered login and the 30-day two-factor trust for every account that was remembered on it. The next login on that Mac needs your password and, with two-factor on, an emailed code. Other Macs are unaffected.

Log out is different: it keeps the remembered login so Use Touch ID still works, and only stops Hailo from signing you in on its own. See Sign out everywhere.
