Install Hailo
Download Hailo for Mac, put it in Applications, get through the first launch and reach the sign-in screen.
Hailo is a Mac app. Installing it takes a download, a drag into Applications and one first launch. This article covers all three and what you see along the way.

Download Hailo
- Open hailo.studio/download.
- Click Download for Mac. The line under the button shows the current version and "macOS 12 or later".
- Wait for the .dmg file to finish downloading.

Put Hailo in Applications
- Open the downloaded .dmg file.
- Drag Hailo into the Applications folder shown in the window.
- Eject the disk image.
- Open Hailo from your Applications folder, not from the disk image.
Hailo keeps itself in the main Applications folder. If an earlier copy was installed in your user Applications folder, Hailo moves itself to the main one on its own during a later update.
First launch
When you open Hailo:
- A dark hold screen with the Hailo mark appears right away while the app starts.
- Hailo checks for an older copy of itself in Applications or your user Applications folder. If it finds one that is older than the copy you opened, it asks Finder to move that older copy to the Trash. macOS may ask you to allow Hailo to control Finder. Allow it and the old copy is trashed for you.
- The sign-in screen appears. Continue with Sign in for the first time, or paste your invite code if you were invited (see Invite codes and activation).
If you decline the Finder permission
Hailo shows this message once:
"An older copy of Hailo is still on this Mac, and opening it will run an out-of-date version. Finder will now show it. Drag that one to the Trash. The copy you are using right now is the current one."
Click Show me. Finder opens with the older copy selected. Drag it to the Trash. Hailo only shows this message once per leftover copy. See Two copies of Hailo if you want the full picture.
Opening Hailo a second time
Hailo runs as a single app. If you open it again while it is already running, the running copy comes to the front instead of a second one starting.
If it didn't work
macOS says "'Hailo' Not Opened" or "Apple could not verify" the app. Click Done. Never click Move to Trash. Then open System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom, and click Open Anyway next to the line that says Hailo was blocked. Confirm with Touch ID or your password. That line only appears for a minute after you try to open the app, so if you do not see it, open Hailo once more, click Done, and go straight back. Hailo opens and does not ask again.
Two Hailo icons in the Dock, or the app looks out of date. An older copy is still installed. Follow Two copies of Hailo.
The hold screen stays for a long time. Hailo is waiting for its cloud pages. Check your internet connection. If the connection is fine, quit and reopen Hailo. See Offline and reconnecting.
Hailo will not open on an older Mac. Hailo needs macOS 12 or later. Update macOS first.
